FIFA World Cup qualification
Process for taking part in this competition
"World Cup qualification" and similar terms redirect here. For other uses, see World Cup qualification (disambiguation)
For the ongoing qualifying tournament, see 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification.
The FIFA World Cup qualification is the process that a national association football team goes through to qualify for the final tournament of the FIFA World Cup. The qualification reduces the large field of eligible entrants from 211 to just 32 for the finals as of the 2022 edition (to be expanded to 48 from 2026 onwards).
Qualifying tournaments are held within FIFA's six continental zones and are organized by their respective confederations: AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), OFC (Oceania), and UEFA (Europe). For each World Cup, FIFA decides the number of places in the finals allocated to each of the zones, based on the numbers and relative strengths of the confederations' teams.
The hosts receive automatic berths, and until 2002, so did the defending champions. Unlike with other sports, results of the previous World Cups or of the continental championships are not taken into account.
The current qualification process is the 2022 qualification, which commenced in 2019 and finishes in 2022.
History[edit]
Over many years, the World Cup's qualification has evolved, from having no qualification at all in 1930, when the tournament was invitational and only 13 teams entered, to the current three-year process. The first World Cup qualifying match was played on 11 June 1933 when Sweden defeated Estonia 6–2 in Stockholm. The first ever goal in a World Cup qualifying match was scored 7 minutes into the game: it was scored according to some sources by Swedish captain Knut Kroon, or according to other sources by Estonian goalkeeper Evald Tipner (own goal).
While the number of teams which qualified for the finals has increased steadily, from 16 between 1934 and 1978, to 24 between 1982 and 1994, and finally to 32 starting from 1998, the qualification format has been basically the same throughout the history of the World Cup. The teams have been grouped continentally, and they competed for a fixed number of places, with one or two places awarded to the winners of intercontinental play-offs.
Qualification spots by continent[edit]
The table below lists the numbers of spots allocated by FIFA for each continent in each tournament. It also shows the total number of teams that entered and played in every qualification cycle.
"H" denotes an automatic spot for the host, "C" denotes an automatic spot for the defending champion, and "inv" indicates the number of teams that were invited in 1930. Places in intercontinental play-offs are represented as fractions, with a place in a direct play-off being counted as 0.5 spots and a place in a semi-final play-off (where the winner would then face yet another team for a place in the finals) being counted as 0.25 spots.
- Notes
- ^Spots were given by invitation only.
- ^ abActually the spots were taken by 10 European teams and no African or Asian ones. After Israel won the African/Asian zone without playing due to withdrawals of other teams, a special play-off was arranged between them and a European team, Wales, and was won by Wales.
- ^ abcdeNone entered.
- ^No teams from the region were members of FIFA before 1950.
- ^Austria withdrew after having qualified.
- ^India, Scotland and Turkey withdrew after having qualified. France initially accepted to participate as a replacement but then withdrew as well.
- ^Includes all teams that entered qualification, even if they withdrew or were excluded afterwards, or qualified by walkover. Does not include pre-determined automatic qualifiers.
- ^ abIncluding host South Africa and non-FIFA member Tuvalu, who participated because other tournaments also served as World Cup qualifiers.
- ^ abIncluding host Qatar, who participated because the continental qualification also served as World Cup qualifiers.
- ^Only includes teams that played at least one qualifying match that was not annulled.
First appearance in qualification by team[edit]
Only teams that played at least one match are considered for the purposes of first appearance. Teams that withdrew prior to the qualification, or that qualified to the World Cup by walkover due to other teams' withdrawals, are not considered.
Bureau of the Council recommends slot allocation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™
The Bureau of the FIFA Council – comprised of the FIFA President and the presidents of each of the six confederations – convened this Thursday at the Home of FIFA in Zurich and agreed on a proposed slot allocation for the FIFA World Cup™ as of the 2026 edition.
The recommendation will now be submitted for the ratification of the FIFA Council, whose next meeting is scheduled for 9 May in Manama, Bahrain, two days prior to the 67th FIFA Congress.
After 10 January, when the FIFA Council unanimously decided on expanding the FIFA World Cup to a 48-team competition, FIFA, the confederations and the Member Associations engaged in a consultation process, which resulted in the proposal recommended by the Bureau of the Council. According to this proposal, the split of direct berths is as follows:
Slot allocation*
· AFC: 8 direct slots
· CAF: 9 direct slots
· CONCACAF: 6 direct slots
· CONMEBOL: 6 direct slots
· OFC: 1 direct slot
· UEFA: 16 direct slots
* The host country would also automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup, and its slot would be taken from the quota of its confederation. In the event of co-hosting, the number of host countries to qualify automatically would be decided by the FIFA Council.
Play-off tournament for two remaining slots The above allocation accounts for 46 of the 48 participating teams. The proposal reviewed by the Bureau of the Council includes a play-off tournament involving six teams to decide the last two FIFA World Cup berths:
- One team per confederation with the exception of UEFA + one additional team from the confederation of the host country;
- Two teams to be seeded based on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. The seeded teams will play for a FIFA World Cup berth against the winners of the first two knockout games involving the four unseeded teams;
- Tournament to be played in the host country(ies) and to be used as a test event for the FIFA World Cup;
- Existing play-off window of November 2025 suggested as tentative date for the 2026 edition.

The FIFA World Cup Finals are the most watched sporting events in the world. They also generate the maximum turnover at betting shops. Then there are the merchandising opportunities generated. The next edition is FIFA 2022, which will be held in Qatar. Though there are three more years for the event, commercial minds are working round the clock to secure their share of the pie.
Online slot machines provide an opportunity to cash in on the fervour that sporting competitions generate. There are a dime a dozen sports themed free slots, but none do justice to what a FIFA slot could offer. In fact, with every FIFA World Cup slot developers release new games, but there has been none that will make you sit up and say “Wow!”
The Concept of a FIFA Themed Slot
– It has to be a branded slot developed under license from FIFA so that copyrighted graphics, video content and audio content can be used.
– The first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930 and the slot game has to reflect this almost 100 years of legacy.
– There will be no caricatures or created images, only photographic realism, still and video.
The Construction of the FIFA Slot
As The Game Loads
It has become the practice to play an introductory clip as the game loads. In this slot game the clip will take players through the host venues of the past 21 finals ending with a showcasing of the stadiums in Qatar. Then the slots reels could be set in the state-of-the-art Lusail Stadium where the final match will be held.
Reels Structure
The reels structures in online slots are getting more and more complicated. On first thought, the FIFA Slot could be developed with a new and innovative structure. But that could draw the attention away from the theme, which is undesirable. The best way forward is with the standard 5×3 structure with 243 ways to win.
High Paying Symbols
The choices for the high paying symbols are limitless. No matter what is selected, a lot will be left out. We propose that the top goal scorers in the history of the competition are set as the high paying symbols. There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that goals being scored constitute the most exciting moments of the game. Fans that have not been able to watch the full game, at least make it a point to see the goals in the highlights. This choice also fits in with the objective of encapsulating the heritage of FIFA.
The list of the top five goal scorers is given below.
1. Miroslav Klose (Germany): 16 goals from 2002 to 2014
2. Ronaldo (Brazil): 15 goals from 1998 to 2006
3. Gerd Muller (West Germany): 14 goals from 1970 to 1974
4. Just Fontaine (France): 13 goals in 1958
5. Pele (Brazil): 12 goals from 1958 to 1970
The payouts would obviously be in proportion to the goals scored.
Win Animations
That the FIFA slot will have win animations is a forgone conclusion. The obvious choice is for a video clip of the player scoring his best goals. But something has to be different so that the slot machine towers above the existing fare.
– Wins with three symbols will have the animation within the symbol space
– Wins with four symbols will have the animation over half the screen
– Wins with five symbols will have full screen animations
Certain other features can also be incorporated to enhance the thrill.
– The clips could have the actual audio commentary of that time
– Instead of showing the same goal with every win, a different goal can be played from a pool of five goals for each player
Low Paying Symbols
Ultimately, football is a team sport. The flags of the countries that have won the FIFA World Cup could be the low paying symbols. Since only eight countries have achieved this honour, it makes sense to include all of them.
1. Brazil (5)
2. Italy (4)
3. Germany (4)
4. Uruguay (2)
5. Argentina (2)
6. France (2)
7. England (1)
8. Spain (1)
The symbol will indicate the number of wins and payouts will be in proportion to the number of wins.
Wild Symbol
The logo for FIFA 2022 is an appropriate choice for the wild symbol. It connects the past with the future. The logo was released in September 2019. It is in the shape of an ‘8’ signifying the eight main stadiums that will be used in the matches.
Bonus Game
This has to be the clincher.
FIFA has had two trophies. The Jules Rimet Trophy was given to Brazil for perpetuity in 1970. Since then FIFA World Cup Trophy is awarded. These two trophies could be symbols used to trigger the bonus game.
– A multi-level bonus game with up to three sets of 10 free spins is envisaged.
– The tournament is down to the quarter finals and you select your team from the eight past winners. You will play a randomly selected opponent.
– In the 10 free spins, the slot game will track the number of times your team flag appears and the number of times the opponent’s flag appears.
– If your team flag appears less times, then you lose. You collect the free spins winnings and the bonus ends.
– If your flag appears more times then you collect the winnings and move to the semi-finals, where you play another team. The process is the same.
– If you win again you play the final. If you win the final you get a jackpot prize in addition to all your free spins wins.
– A bracket and simulated results of other matches could be added between the levels to create a sense of realism.
Existing FIFA Slots
This FIFA Slot could well remain a pipe dream. There are other football themed slots you can play instead. Some of them are listed below.
– Soccer Safari from Microgaming
– Football Fans from Playtech
– Football Frenzy from Realtime Gaming
– Football Champions Cup from NetEnt
There is so much excitement already brewing for this tournament that a slot game that encapsulates it all would certainly be a winner.

We suggest you try out the demo games and see for yourself what the bonus rounds and other special features contain. Please note, when you play free, you may not receive bonuses, and not all Football slots have bonuses, free spins, or jackpots.
If you want a better chance of winning bigger or more frequently, we recommend choosing a game that has different bonus features. A few of these coin machines may have a generous payout amount.
Return to player (RTP) of Football themed games and strategies
If you take a look at some of the Football slot machines, you’ll see that most of them have an RTP between 96% and 97%, which is higher than the average 95%. This means that the house advantage is lower, and players can expect to get back a decent amount for their winnings.
With slot machines in general, there’s no real strategy except for taking that extra risk. We’ve found none of the above games to describe any system for more potential wins.
Software providers of Football themed game slots
As mentioned above, those three Football themed games are creations of Playtech and Novomatic, which are leading slot machine software providers. In addition to them, there are many other Football slot developers.
