Aliyah Matharu's Hot Shooting Leads Longhorns to Victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. &#x; It&#x;s hard to beat a team three times in a season. The No. 7 Texas Longhorns had to overcome that hard reality on Friday.

Thank goodness the Longhorns had Aliyah Matharu.

Her 3-point shooting allowed Texas to finally put away Kansas State, , for its third victory over the Wildcats this season, this one coming in the Big 12 Women&#x;s Tournament quarterfinals.

No. 3 seed Texas () will have to beat a team for the third time again on Saturday when its faces No. 2 seed Iowa State at p.m. Saturday in the semifinals. The Longhorns have beaten the Cyclones twice this season. Iowa State defeated West Virginia, , on Friday.

Texas is trying to win its first Big 12 Tournament since

Kansas State () was closing in on tying, or perhaps overtaking the Longhorns, down late in the third quarter. But Matharu came up with two clutch 3-pointers to push the Longhorns out to a point lead entering the final minute. Then a basket by guard Rori Harmon gave Texas a lead going into the final quarter.

At that point, Matharu had 15 points &#x; all on 3-pointers &#x; in just 15 minutes. It&#x;s the kind of efficiency Texas coach Vic Schaefer wanted from Matharu when he moved her to the bench after back-to-back losses to Baylor. Since then Texas has won nine straight games and Matharu, ultimately, has turned into a spark plug.

Matharu finished with 15 points, while guard Joanne Allen-Taylor had 12 points and forward Lauren Ebo had 17 points. Harmon also scored 16 points.

Ebo&#x;s biggest role was on defense, where she once again had the unenviable job of trying to slow down Kansas State&#x;s center, Ayoka Lee. In the two previous meetings, Lee had a combined 30 points and 16 rebounds.

Ebo fronted Lee and the Longhorns gave her as much help as they could. Lee finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. As in the first two meetings, Lee needed help from other teammates, and she got the most from freshman guard Serena Sundell, who had 11 points. Emilee Ebert added 15 points.

But it wasn&#x;t enough for Kansas State to overcome Texas, even though the Wildcats turned it into a two-possession game in the final 20 seconds.

Recommended Articles

In the first half, Texas was at times dominant, building a lead. But Kansas State&#x;s run to close the second quarter made it a Texas lead at halftime, and it stayed close until Matharu&#x;s hot streak.

It was definitely a partisan crowd for Kansas State and not just because the game was an hour from Manhattan. Many Iowa State fans stuck around for the game to cheer on the Wildcats, as the Cyclones would face the winner.

Iowa State&#x;s win over West Virginia was much closer than it should have been. The Cyclones were up by as much as 21 points, early in the third quarter, thanks to a barrage of 3-pointers. ISU scored 27 of their 41 first-half points on 3-pointers and, at one point, made 10 of their first 20 from distance.

When the bottom fell out of their shooting, the Cyclones found a way to survive with defense and the driving ability of guard Emily Ryan, who hit key shots down the stretch.

But the Cyclones live and die by the 3-pointers and have three quality shooters from that distance in Ryan, Lexi Donarski and Ashley Joens. All three were in double figures on Friday, with Ryan and Donarski scoring 14 points each, while Joens added 13 points and 14 rebounds.

But Texas has given Iowa State fits. In the first meeting in Ames, Iowa, on Jan. 19, the Longhorns won, Joens and her sister, Aubrey Joens, missed that gave due to COVID protocols. Lest anyone think it was a fluke, the Longhorns held the Cyclones to the same number of points &#x; 48 &#x; in a win in Austin on Feb.

Joens is the Cyclones&#x; leading scorer and rebounder, while Ryan is the team&#x;s catalyst, leading the Cyclones in assists and has set new ISU records for steals and assists in a game. Donarski, meanwhile, is the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Baseball Rules

Baseball

Baseball is a sport that dates back as far as and formats of the game have been in place until the modern era today. The game is predominantly big in North America, Canada and Japan. The game is played worldwide with the pinnacle of sport coming from the World Series of Baseball. Ironically, this event is only competed by North American teams.

Object of the Game

The object of baseball is to score more runs than your opponent. The idea is to hit the ball thrown at you as far as you can before running around 4 bases to complete a run. Once a player manages to get around the four bases before being tagged out, then another batter steps in.

Players & Equipment

A game is played out between two teams, each made up of 9 players. The game lasts for 9 innings with each team alternating between batting and fielding in each inning. The scores at the end of the innings are added to a cumulative score and the team with most points wins. Each team has three outs per inning before they then swap roles. Each inning can be broken down into the top (where the away team bats), and the bottom (where the home team bats).

The field is split into two sections: infield and outfield. Separating the infield and outfield is a diamond shape with four bases, spaced at 90 feet apart each. In the center of the infield is the pitching mound where the pitcher stands and throws the ball toward the batter. The batter stands at the home plate. The other three bases are known as first base, second base and third base. The batter must touch all bases before successfully scoring a run.

The bats are made out of either wood, aluminium or metal materials. The ball is white with red stitching and is roughly 3 inches in diameter. The fielding team wear ‘mits’, which are basically an oversized glove to help them catch and pick up the ball. The catcher (standing behind the batter to catch any balls missed) wears extra padding in their glove, along with leg guards, a body pad, and a helmet.

Scoring

To score, a batter must hit the ball with the bat into the designated fielding area and make it around all four bases (before the fielding team is able to collect the ball and throw it to the base the batter is running to). A player can score a mandatory point if they hit a home run, which usually means the ball has left the playing area, often landing in the crowd. A player can stop at any base if they feel they might not make it to the next base before being tagged out.

Players can score multiple points from one hit if more than one player is already on one of the bases. When you hear the phrase 'the bases are loaded', this refers to the instance where there is a player on every base. So, every time a batter successfully makes it to first base, the other players on the second and third bases are able to trickle home, earning a point for their team each time. Depending on how many players get around to home plate before being tagged will depend on how many points you score. A maximum of four points can be scored on one hit.

Winning the Game

To win a game, you must outscore your opposition through the 9 innings played. The team with the most points after 9 innings is deemed the winner. In the event of a tie, extra innings are played until a winner has been concluded.

Rules of Baseball

  • Baseball has two teams of 9 players.
  • The fielding team’s positions are made up of a pitcher, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, third baseman, and three outfielders at left field, centre field and right field.
  • Games last for 9 innings of which both teams get to bat once. If the game is a tie after 9 innings then an extra inning will be added until a winner is found. If the team batting second in the bottom of the 9th inning are already ahead in points, then they do not need to complete their batting innings.
  • Once a batting order is picked, then it cannot be changed throughout the game. Substitutes are permitted, however, they must bat in the order of the previous player whom they replaced.
  • If the batter manages to hit the ball from the pitcher, they must make an effort to at least get to first base. They can then run to as many bases as they wish before being tagged out. Each base must be touched with some part of the batters body when running past.
  • A batter gets up to three strikes before getting out. A strike is deemed when a batter swings for a ball and misses it. The batter can leave the ball but, if it’s within a certain area (called the 'strike zone'), then a strike will also be given. If four balls miss the strike zone and the batter does not swing their bat, they can walk to first base.
  • When on base, the batter can run to the next base at any point.
  • Players can be dismissed by either a 'strike out' (referring to a batsman missing the ball three times), 'force out' (when a player fails to make the base before the defensive player), 'fly out' (when the ball is hit in the air and caught without it bouncing), and 'tag outs' (where a defensive player with the ball tags the batsman with the ball all whilst they are running).

Field of Dreams Game: MLB going for once-in-a-lifetime vibe

DYERSVILLE, Iowa — The Yankees will wake up in Kansas City on Thursday morning, while the White Sox will awaken in Minneapolis.

Then they’ll meet up in a different time zone: the early 20th century.

One of the most hyped regular-season contests in Major League Baseball history will occur Thursday night (the weather forecast encouraging), when the Yankees and White Sox face off in the Field of Dreams Game, certainly the first real-life competition to take place at a de facto movie set. MLB constructed a 7,seat pop-up ballpark adjacent to the small field created for the Oscar-nominated film (and maintained ever since).

“It made sense that we moved home plate 1, feet to the west,” Murray Cook, MLB’s coordinator for these one-off games (and not the former Yankees general manager, apologies), said Wednesday as he stood in the Yankees’ dugout on the first-base side.

In the spirit of this unique occasion, MLB hosted the media Wednesday for a walk-through to show off its $5 million-plus investment. The goal will be to provide the fans with a once-in-a-lifetime experience while minimizing inconveniences for the players.

MLB constructed a 7,seat pop-up ballpark adjacent to the small field created for the Oscar-nominated film "Field of Dreams."

For the fans, well, “They’ve somehow managed to erect an amusement park in six months,” said Dwier Brown, who played John Kinsella in the movie and has visited here roughly two dozen times. There is a corn maze. There are cardboard cutouts of the most popular Yankees and White Sox players. There is audio from the film playing as you walk the quarter-mile from the original field, where patrons will enter, to the temporary one, and a wooden sign with arrows pointing toward Yankee Stadium ( miles), the White Sox’s home Guaranteed Rate Field ( miles) and the Dyersville Town Center (very close).

There’s also a culinary concoction called an “Apple Pie Hot Dog,” created by Guy Fieri and sponsored, naturally, by Chevrolet (remember the s commercial?). It’s a hot dog wrapped in an apple-pie crust, with filling. I’m glad I tried it and I won’t be eating another one.

TV viewers, meanwhile, can get their nostalgia-cinema fix by seeing the players enter from the corn stalks in right field, just as in the film; the hand-operated scoreboard; and the barnwood on the outfield walls and behind home plate. The place certainly captures the old-school ethos.

The players, of course, don’t want an entirely old-school experience, so the clubhouses are bigger than, say, the visitors’ dressing quarters at Wrigley Field, with a couple of workout bikes at the ready as well as a trainer’s room, manager’s office, coaches’ changing area and hitting cages Because of the remote location, both teams will head for Chicago, where they’ll resume their series Saturday at Guaranteed Rate (worst ballpark name ever), following the game’s completion. It’ll be the very rare road trip in which the clubs don’t spend a single night near the ballpark.

It won’t go perfectly, because these endeavors never do. Yet if the players come out of it healthy and somewhat happy and the fans (both on site and at home) are entertained, then this boldest venture yet by MLB will be deemed a success.

“It’s really spectacular,” Brown said. “I was really getting teared up [exploring it].”

“I don’t want to get corn-y on you,” Cook said of his latest creation, “but it’s pretty a-maize-ing.”

Yeah, this’ll be a very family-friendly, if occasionally cheesy, event. A celebration, a callback and a commercial for the sport’s highest ambitions.

“It’s a magical place,” Cook said of the entire site, and for one night, baseball hopes to make all of its modern concerns disappear. It’s hard to envision a better setting to pull off that trick.

Field of Dreams Game: MLB going for once-in-a-lifetime vibe

DYERSVILLE, Iowa Hot Shot How about a Game of Baseball The Yankees will wake up in Kansas City on Thursday morning, while the White Sox will awaken in Minneapolis.

Then they’ll meet up in a different time zone: the early 20th century.

One of the most hyped regular-season contests in Major League Baseball history will occur Thursday night (the weather forecast encouraging), when the Yankees and White Sox face off in the Hollywood casino sports book of Dreams Game, certainly the first real-life competition to take place at a de facto movie set.

TV viewers, meanwhile, can get their nostalgia-cinema fix by seeing the players enter from the corn stalks in right field, Hot Shot How about a Game of Baseball, just as in the film; the hand-operated scoreboard; and the barnwood on the outfield walls and behind home plate.

“It’s really spectacular,” Brown said. casino rewards zodiac was really getting teared up [exploring it].”
