Even though Conn, who played beauty school dropout Frenchy, is now a happily married New York suburbanite with a 5-year-old son, she is wearing a sterling silver pendant Travolta gave her on graduation night two decades ago. Conn admits, though, that her recollection of that party is somewhat hazy.
``Stockard (Channing, who played Rizzo, Danny's female counterpart ) gave all the Pink Ladies these gold whistles on long gold chains, but she baked these very special brownies for everybody. Hey, what can I say? It was the '70s.'
``Grease' turned out to be the definitive '70s version of the fabulous '50s, taking the ``American Graffiti' and ``Happy Days' infatuation with Elvis, Ike and all things innocent to its inevitable campy conclusion. Its original success was hardly a surprise. The musical on which it was based was one of the most successful in the history of Broadway, Grease Pink Ladies & T-Birds Slots its stars, Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, were both peaking at just the moment the movie was released.

To them, it's like a Disney cartoon. I think maybe teenagers raised on MTV probably relate to it like a really long music video.
``But who knows why people love it so much? Conn herself was anything but a Pink Lady. She was a self-professed ``good little Jewish girl,' daughter of Beverly and Leonard (not that one) Bernstein, with a big dream of getting to Broadway. That took 40 years. She started out making commercials in New York, using her adorably mousy voice to sell soap and coffee. Once when leaving open auditions, she began talking to a familiar face she thought she remembered from an audition. Although he insisted they had never met, he invited her for coffee, where she soon realized she actually knew Henry Winkler from television.
Winkler told her to look him up if she ever got to Hollywood, and three months later, she was there, auditioning Area 21 Slots Machine ``Happy Days.' With Winkler's help, she won the recurring part of Ralph's girlfriend. When that ended, she briefly collected unemployment, meeting fellow East Coast transplant Travolta in the unemployment office. Having spent an entire summer chewing gum and wearing garishly colored wigs, Conn's first postproduction stops were visits to a dentist and hairdresser. Shortly before the movie opened, Paramount sent her on her first publicity tour, which included a trip to Detroit and an infamous interview with Dick Purtan, who asked her what the main difference was between her two most famous co-stars, Winkler and Travolta.
``About 6 inches,' said Conn innocently.
She was referring to height, she says sweetly, but to spare the feelings of Winkler, she has changed the anecdote to ``3 inches' in her new book, ``Frenchy's 'Grease' Scrapbook,' (Hyperion $) published to coincide with the film's re-release.
Collecting snapshots she and the other cast members took on the set and the memories of everyone involved, says Conn, made her feel even more like the high school reunion historian.
``Tracking everyone down was work,' she says. ``But it was worth it just to talk to people I hadn't seen in years.'
She took the project on as a fund-raiser for the Therapeutic Nursery, which provides support for autistic children and their parents in Palisades, N.J., near her Hudson Valley home.
Conn was one of the few ``Grease' stars to reprise her role in the sequel, ``Grease II,' which starred Maxwell Caulfield and a young Michelle Pfeiffer. Originally, the entire cast was set to reunite in a sequel called ``Summer School,' but Paramount, not knowing what it had in the original film, dragged its feet. By the time the movie took off, ``Saturday Night Fever' had made Travolta a superstar, and Newton-John had lost interest.
Conn did a couple of other films, some television and then found a niche on the PBS children's show ``Shining Time Station.' And four years ago, she finally made it to Broadway in ``Lost in Yonkers.'

The prequel is set to air on Paramount+, an over-the-top American streaming service operated by ViacomCBS Streaming.
The Rise of the Pink Ladies takes place around four years before rock ‘n’ roll, T-Birds, and the original movie, Grease Pink Ladies & T-Birds Slots, Grease.
It follows the story of four outcast girls, alias the pink ladies having fun on their terms leading to the moral panic that will transform Rydell High forever.
In the hit film, Grease Pink Ladies & T-Birds Slots, Didi Conn, Dinah Manoff, Stockard Channing, and Jamie Donnelly played the pink ladies.
The movie grossed $ million against a budget of $6 million, making it one of the most successful films at the time.

The rumours of the prequel began in October after the purchase of HBO Max by Paramount pictures.

According to Variety, Paramount+ has now optioned the series, taking over from HBO Max.
The prequel will still be a musical and still take place at Rydell High and focus on the Pink Ladies.
