Rio de Janeiro Carnival FAQS Top 10

We have been offering Carnival in Brazil since 2004 and our clients always ask us great questions. We put together a top 10 of Rio de Janeiro Carnival FAQs.

Rio de Janeiro Carnival FAQS

1) When is the Carnival? – Rio de Janeiro Carnival, Brazil, happens every year the week before Lent. (At the same time as “Mardi Gras” in the USA). Typically it occurs in February of every year but can start at early as late January or in early March. Check out the Rio Carnival Dates for every year.

2) How do people in Rio celebrate Carnival?– Rio de Janeiro Carnival is celebrated by locals in the following three ways  – 1) Bloco Street Parties  2) Private Carnival Balls/Parties  3) Samba Parade at the Sambadrome

Bloco Street Parties:  Carnival Bloco Street Parties (or translated to “Block Parties”) are free to attend and happen during the day from the morning all the way up to sunset. People dress in informal costumes (much like Americans and westerners do during Halloween) and dance on the streets where live music is played.  People sing, dance and drink and let loose.  There are blocos in virtually all neighborhoods in Rio and we distribute a written guide to our guests as to the best ones do attend as they vary greatly in terms of composition and age of crowd, type of music, size of event etc.  The blocos vary in size from a few hundred to a few hundred THOUSAND people. They are a quintessential part of attending Rio Carnival and we do recommend at least checking out one bloco street party throughout your stay. Rio Carnival Bloco Street Party pictured below:

Private Carnival Parties:   The second way Brazilians celebrate Carnival in Rio is by attending private Carnival parties.  Parties are held at some of Rio’s top upscale venues and generally are outdoors . They typically feature local Samba music and can be held during the day, such as in the case of a Brazilian Feijoada or Barbecue or at night on famous landmarks in  Rio de Janeiro. click HERE for more information regarding parties.  VIP Carnival party pictured below.

Samba Parade at the Sambadrome:   The third way that people celebrate Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is by attending the world famous Carnival Parade at the Sambadrome. The sambadrome is an outdoor auditorium where the famous floats parade. This is what comes to mind when people think of Carnival as this is what people typically have seen on television or the internet. Carnival tickets must be purchased in order to attend the Sambadrome and vary greatly in pricing.  The Sambadrome parade is pictured below.

3) Do I have to purchase tickets for the Rio de Janeiro Carnival? – Yes, you do. The Carnival in essence is the famous parade and competition held at what is known as the Sambadrome (Sambodromo in Portuguese). It is a long street with bleachers and VIP boxes on each side of the street where the Samba Schools, which are groups of thousands of people in local and folkloric costumes and floats, compete nightly during the Carnival. The Sambadrome is closed off and a private venue so you must purchase tickets to watch the show.

4) When should I go to the Sambadrome? – There is a parade at the Sambadrome on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights at the Sambadrome. The first two nights feature samba schools and floats that are not top tier.  It is thus recommended to go the samba parade on either Sunday or Monday as these are the actual schools that compete for the title each Carnival. Since there are too many samba schools to compete all in one night, they are divided between Sunday and Monday nights. Unless you are wanting to see a particular samba school on one of the two nights, either night (Sunday or Monday) is generally very similar.

5) Should I go to the Samba parade every night? – Most of our guests (95%) will be more than satisfied by only going once to the Samba parade. Although we have had cases of people going more than one night, the overwhelming majority of our guests only go once and are more than satisfied, by going one time to the Samba parade as it can get repetitive.

6) What do you do on the other nights/days?– TGW takes its guests to exclusive parties on Friday and Saturday, as well as Tuesday of Carnival (the nights OTHER than the Sambadrome), and has awesome options where locals typically frequent. We also recommend checking out the “blocos” which are the free street parties all around Rio de Janeiro at least once during Carnival. For more FAQs on parties and activities click HERE.

PartyParty

PartyParty

7) What kinds of Carnival tickets are available?– The Sambodrome has three different general types of sections. The First is Bleachers/Grandstands (“arquibancadas” in Portuguese). These are bleachers. The bleachers are divided into numbered sections. The second type of ticket is called Open Boxes (“Frisas” in Portuguese). They are street-level seats where you can see the Carnival parade and floats up close. The final type is the Covered VIP Boxes  (called “Camarotes” ) they are the equivalent of a corporate VIP box at a stadium where food and drinks are included as well as security and are quite expensive and exclusive. click HERE for more information regarding the various sections in the Sambadrome.

8) What tickets should I buy? – As far as the bleachers are concerned, we recommend sections 3,5, 7 or 9. The higher the number, the closer to the middle of the “Sambadrome” avenue and better the view.  If you are on a tight budget, we recommend Section 3 or 5. If your budget permits a bit more, we recommend 5 or 7. Section 9 is the “tourist” section and the ONLY grandstand section that features actual numbered seats.  If you would like to splurge, we recommend Covered box seats (starting at about $700 to $1k range per person) or Camarotes if you are on an unlimited budget (over $2k per person). Bottom line – GO to the Carnival and purchase tickets that fit within your budget as it would be a shame to go to Rio and NOT see the Carnival!

Sambadrome map

9) Should I purchase section 9 tickets that are numbered? – This depends on the client. If you are not good being around a lot of people then YES this is a good idea. The other bleacher sections, 3,5,7, etc are NOT numbered. This means they are on a “first-come, first-serve” basis and it can be difficult to find a spot at the beginning of the night. These sections also tend to be livelier as more Brazilians frequent these sections and are singing and dancing! If you have a problem being with a lot of people or don’t want the hassle of finding a seat then we recommend the section 9 seats, otherwise, you are probably good with the other sections.

10) Can I parade inside the Sambadrome in Costume?– You definitely can! This is a very unique and amazing experience! To do so, however, you must purchase a formal costume which is made by the local Samba school which is competing. Costumes are quite expensive as they are hand made/crafted and take months to make. (you also get to keep the actual costume). Costumes for the Carnival vary in pricing but typically start at about $500USD per costume to over $1,000USD. If you do not want to spend this sort of money and do want a cool experience, you can dress up and have an amazing time in the informal “blocos” (street parties) that happen every day around Rio during the Carnival.  All TGW guests receive a customized list of the best blocos to attend as there are hundreds of them and it can be difficult to choose the best ones.

Sambadrome Parade

The Sambadrome is the official venue of Rio Carnival and will host events of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The Sambadrome is divided into various sectors, or sections, and offers a variety of seating options, ranging from luxury suites to open-air bleachers. The sectors are located along the 700 meter (roughly half-mile) stretch of the samba runway, the avenue down which the participating Samba Schools parade. All the sectors are aligned symmetrically, even-numbered sectors on one side of the avenue and odd-numbered sectors located directly across the samba runway. The lower-numbered sectors are located towards the beginning of the samba parade route and the higher-numbered sectors are located toward the end of the samba runway.

Choosing the Right Tickets for You

The Sambadrome Parades consist of only the most elite of Rio de Janeiro’s hundreds of Samba Schools, and the Sambódromo was designed specifically with the audience in mind — so you really can’t go wrong with any of your decisions! That said, it’s important to plan ahead and tailor your Carnival experience to your needs and your budget.

There are two important factors that come into play when deciding which tickets to buy, and they both really come down to you and what you want out of your Carnival experience: first you have to think about which day you wish to to see and then you have to choose what type of tickets you want to sit in and where. After you have determined which ticket is best for you, you can head over to our tickets page and book yout Rio Carnival parade tickets today!

Types of Seats

Within each sector there are different types of tickets that correspond to the various ticketing options available for that sector.

Grandstands

These are the least expensive and most popular tickets in the Sambadrome. With the exception of Sector 9 (the tourist sector: see below), Grandstand tickets or Arquibancada in Portuguese, are not individually numbered tickets. They are general admission tickets that offer excellent views of the Sambadrome Parade runway.

Sitting in the Grandstands is an exciting and unforgettable experience where most people cheer and dance throughout the night, offering you the chance to truly see what Carnival means to Brazilians.

Allocated Chairs

Allocated chairs, or cadeiras in Portuguese, are the most affordable of the Sambadrome’s assigned seats. The allocated chairs are available only in Sector 12 at the end of the parade runway and are located near the Apotheosis Square. Organized in an open-air theatre facing the parade route, the allocated chairs are well laid out and offer unrestricted views of the entire samba runway.

Front Boxes (Frisas)

The front boxes, sometimes referred to as open air boxes (or Frisas in Portuguese) are considered the best tickets in the Sambadrome. Frisas are located right off the Samba parade runway. They are situated in four rows of boxes, those rows ranging from row A to row D, row A being at floor-level just a few feet from the parade runway!

Each Frisa box will sit 6 people. Each Frisa ticket has a reserved numbered chair.

From the Frisas you will feel the pulsating beat of the samba drums from your own private VIP box. You will witness the parade’s vibrant and mesmerizing floats, dances, and costumes as if you are marching alongside the thousands of members of the Samba Schools! This is a true VIP experience.

Luxury Suite (Camarotes)

Luxury Suites (or Camarotes  in Portuguese) are specially decorated elevated covered boxes spread across the parade route, from Sector 2 to Sector 11. Considered to be the most coveted tickets in the Sambadrome, the Luxury Suites offer great views of the parade route with first-class VIP amenities including waiter service, a buffet, and an open bar. While Carnival is a notoriously safe event, Luxury Suites are the tickets of choice for high profile people. Luxury suites offer enhanced security, so you may find yourself seated alongside celebrities, politicians, and the world’s royalty. Luxury Suites offer perks not available to the rest of the Sambadrome.

Sector 9: The Tourist Sector

Sector 9 offers a little more comfort and security than the general admission tickets of the other Grandstand sectors. Sector 9 is considered the Tourist Section. As opposed to the general admission concrete bleachers of the other Grandstand sectors, here the cement rows of seats are assigned and are clearly marked, so ticket prices in the reserved seats of Sector 9 run slightly higher than the grandstand seats of the other sectors.

Purchasing tickets for sector 9 provides the comfort of knowing that you have a designated and reserved location to watch the parade.

Even though it considered the tourist sector, some Cariocas do reserve these seats. The energy reverberates throughout the Sambadrome — especially so since Sector 9 is located right next to the niche of percussionists, the location from which the percussionists’ performances are judged.

Choosing the Parade

Each night the Sambadrome will be filled to capacity as Rio’s top Samba Schools, rally the crowds and execute meticulously choreographed performances as they sing and dance their way down the parade route along the 700 meter (half-mile) stretch of the Sambadrome runway.

Rio Carnival is truly a unique event that goes beyond the glitz and glam of extravagant parades. Rio Carnival Samba Parades are intense and highly anticipated competitions amongst the Samba Schools located throughout the city of Rio. These Samba Schools are separated hierarchically into groups, the most elite of which compete in Carnival’s official venue: the Sambadrome. The groups that parade through the Sambadrome are called the Access Group and the Special Group. This are the very best in class of all the Rio Samba Schools and fought hard to keep their status.

Access Group competitions are wild and exciting events that fill the Sambadrome to capacity. As the first of the major Sambadrome Parades, the mood is pulsating as the schools that make up the Access Group pull out all the stops to engage the crowd with the hopes of beating out their rival schools, as the winner of the Access Group is bumped up into the more prestigious Special Group for the following year. If you are traveling to Carnival on a budget, this event provides a great value for your money, as the tickets are cheaper than those for Special Group Parades, while the processions and performances are extremely high quality.

Each year, Special Group Parade Tickets are the hottest commodity of Rio Carnival. At these events, the Sambadrome is packed with impassioned fans who have waited a year to see the most elite group of Samba Schools in Rio. The atmosphere is electrifying and the the parades boast the most sensational performances in the world. The twelve Samba Schools that make up the Special Group parade on one of two nights. Both nights promise to display the most breathtaking floats, dazzling costumes, incredible songs, and unbelievable dances. After the scores are calculated, the top six schools of the Special School are invited back to the Sambadrome for the Champion’s Parade.

The Champion’s Parade is a night of vindication for each of the six participating Samba Schools, and an opportunity for fans and schools alike to celebrate and reaffirm that a year’s worth of hard work and dedication has paid off. Donning the same extravagant costumes and giving the same mind-blowing performances that brought them back to the Sambadrome, with the pressure of competition behind them, the Champion’s Parade is a night of fun where excitement and emotions run high. Amidst a backdrop of rhythm and beats, at this parade you will likely find yourself amongst the thousands of Cariocas (local residents of Rio) who tirelessly applaud as the winning teams parade through the Sambadrom. As many of the nearly half-a-million tourists have returned home, this is a great night to meet and mingle with the Cariocas. These tickets go fast, so if you’re still around for this extraordinary event, book your Rio Carnival 2021 Champion’s Parade tickets now!

Choosing Your Seats

After you have decided which parades fit your travel schedule, it is important to familiarize yourself with your seating options. Understanding the layout of the Sambadrome and the way the parade functions will help you decide where you want to sit. Specifically designed to provide great visibility for every ticket holder, the Sambadrome is divided into Sectors and offers a variety of seating options depending on your budget and needs. As sectors and ticket types offer unique experiences, there will inevitably be benefits and drawbacks to each of your alternatives — but remember: there truly isn’t a bad seat in the house!

The Sambadrome is divided into perfectly symmetrical seating sectors, with even sectors located on one side of the parade route and odd sections located directly opposite them. Many people prefer to sit up-close-and-center to get a better glimpse at the bewildering dance steps, ornately decorated floats, and intricate costumes as they pass by one-by-one; others prefer to view the event among the crowds of locals, where they have the opportunity to witness the entire parade as it evolves from start to finish. The choice is yours to make, and this page is designed to help you make the best decision for you. If this is not your first Carnival, note that the layout of the Sambadrome has changed in recent years.

The Grandstand: General Admissions

Samba School performances begin at the lower-numbered sectors and proceed toward the higher-numbered sectors. If this is not your first Carnival, note that the layout of the Sambadrome has changed in recent years. In 2012, when renovations for the 2016 Olympics were complete, Sector two was replaced by Sectors 2, 4, 6, and 8, and and located directly across the avenue from Sectors 3, 5, 7, and 9. The Grandstand seats offer great views of the entire parade route at an affordable price. Sectors 4, 5, 6, and 7 are the most centrally located, offering a full 180 degree view of the parade. With the exception of Sector 9, which is the “Tourist Sector”, these concrete bleachers are general admissions tickets and are not numbered, so it’s recommended that you arrive early to secure the best possible seats. In the Grandstand you are free to move around as you please, and most people tend to stand as close as they can to the front so they can scream, sing, dance, and cheer as the Samba Schools put on their breathtaking performances. These seats are great for getting a feel for what Rio Carnival means to the Cariocas, or locals, who will show you how to party Carnival-style!

Frisa: Open Air Front Box

The front boxes (or frisas) are considered by many to be the best seats in the Sambadrome, offering the same level of privacy as the luxury suites, without the VIP services. These open-air frisas are located as close as you can get to the parade route, organized in four rows of boxes ranging from rows A to D, row A situated at floor-level. Each box has seating for 6 people in numbered chairs. The frisas allow you to feel the beat of the samba drums from your own private box, and you will see the vibrant and mesmerizing floats, fast-paced dance moves, and intricately designed costumes as if you are part of the parade. And remember: you don’t need to book the entire box to enjoy the best seats in the house.

The Luxury Suites (Camarotes)

The Luxury Suites (or Camarotes in Portuguese) are elevated, specially decorated indoor boxes that are spread across the parading avenue from Sectors 2 to 11. Considered the most sought after seats in the Sambadrome, the Luxury Suites provide spectators with a great view of the parade route, in addition to first-class waiter service, a buffet, and a unlimited drinks. Though Rio Carnival is a widely-recognized to be a safe event, as the preferred ticket option for high-profile people from around the world, the luxury suites offer enhanced security — so you may find yourself seated alongside celebrities, politicians, and even royalty. While they offer amenities not available to the rest of the crowd, the Luxury Suites come at a cost. Not only are they the most expensive tickets in the Sambadrome, but visibility can also be a problem. Sometimes the suite window is only big enough for 12 people to watch the show with unrestricted views; therefore, we only recommend the suites for closed parties of 12, 24, or 36 people.

Location Along the Parade Route

Samba School performances begin at the lower-numbered sectors and proceed toward the higher-numbered sectors. There are certain benefits to sitting in a sector located at the beginning of the parade route. These seats offer the unique opportunity to watch the Samba Schools gather, warm up, and make last minute preparations as they anxiously await their moment in the spotlight. What’s more, the opening of each Samba School’s procession is the most highly anticipated moment of the parade; after a year of hard work, this is the euphoric moment when the school enters the parade route and introduces it’s theme. The whole crowd goes nuts, and being close to witness this is a moment you will cherish your entire life.

Additionally, toward the beginning of the procession there is less of a lag time between performances. The Samba School that is on deck begins its performance when the preceding school is half-way through their procession. Seats located in the higher-numbered sectors have to wait up to an hour for the parade to reach them. Despite all the time spent practicing and rehearsing, for whatever reason, schools tend to mismanage their time and move slower in the beginning and middle of their performances. It’s important to note that Sector 1 consists of Grandstand tickets only and offers limited views of the final moments of the parade. These seats, however, are not sold but rather are given out by the competing Samba Schools.

There are distinct benefits to the seats located toward the end of the parade route. While they may be rushing to finish their performances within the allotted time, by the end of the procession, school members come to the sobering realization that for them, this year’s parade, the magnificent product of a year’s worth of meticulous planning and practice, is quickly coming to a close. So those seated in these sections will observe some of the best performances as Samba School members go all-out to make the most of the time remaining.

For most Sambadrome Parade spectators, seats located toward the middle of the parade route offer the best of both worlds. By the time the middle of the parade has rolled around, Samba School members are warmed up, enthusiastic, and eager to impress the judges — most of whom are seated toward the middle. Sitting toward the middle of the parade route is a great choice, as you have better views of the entire procession. In these seats you can experience the excitement of the opening of a Samba Performance, but you can also witness as the pace picks up toward the end. What’s more, there is a very short lag time between performances.

Sector 10

After the renovations to the Sambadrome, Sector 4 was renamed Sector 10. Prior to the change, this sector had slightly obstructed views of the runway — but now that is no longer the case. Sector 10 is a great choice for Grandstand seats and is very popular among Cariocas, natives of Rio de Janeiro and Rio Carnival enthusiasts, who sit together in small groups. The Grandstands of Sector 10 provide fantastic views of the entire parade as it progresses and evolves. Sector 10 is also typically the least expensive of the frisas, or front boxes; however, this is because of its location towards the end of the parade avenue.

Sector 11

Seats in Sector 11 are unique with respect to their location next to the drummers’ niche, called the Recuo da Bateria. The drummers’ niche refers to the location where the percussionists from each parading Samba School stop about halfway through their school’s performance and keep drumming. Sector 11 is an exciting place to sit, as you will feel the beat of the drums pulsating throughout your body. This is sure to get you into the Carnival spirit long before everyone else. What’s more, located directly across from Sector 10, Sector 11 offers great views of the parade as the Samba Schools make their climactic march toward the end of Apotheosis Square.

Sectors 12 and 13

Sectors 12 and 13 are located the closest to “Apotheosis Square”, and are considered a great value for your money when compared to the other reserved seats in the Sambadrome. Seats in these Sectors are organized in long rows of allocated chairs facing the parade route. Apotheosis Square is where Samba Schools gather at the end of their performances and take off their heavy costumes. Many of them stay to watch the rest of the schools perform, but many of them leave, either returning home or going to one of the many parties throughout the city. It is not uncommon for parade participants to leave their costumes at Sambadrome, providing the unique opportunity for spectators located close to the square, particularly Sector 13, to rescue and wear costumes that have been left behind.

How to Say it in Portuguese:

The parading avenue – a pista de desfile
The sector – o setor
The sectors – os setores
Even-numbered sectors – setores pares
Odd-numbered sectors – setores ímpares
Grandstands – arquibancadas
Front Boxes – frisas

A Guide to the Brazil Carnival

Carnival week is one of the most awaited events in Rio, but the parties in Rio start weeks before the Brazil Carnival Week itself. Brazil Carnival week happens before Lent, and is considered as the last all-out celebration before everyone enters into a state of penitence. The locals and tourists of Rio all participate in this extravagant affair filled with groovy samba music, addictive dance moves, and the most magnificent costumes you will ever lay eyes on. If you want to experience a one of a kind party, then this is the party you should never miss.

The Rio Carnival Week

Dubbed as the Greatest Show on Earth, the Rio Carnival never fails give any local or tourist the party that they deserve. The Rio Carnival is one event that gets everyone excited. It normally takes up to one year for everything to be prepared: from the dazzling costumes, the upbeat samba music to the electrifying dance moves.

All of these are prepared by the 12 best Samba Schools in Rio who battle it out in the Sambadromo for the best performance of the year. Each performance lasts 75 minutes with a specific theme to be followed. All performances can be watched at the Sambadromo which is divided into several sectors, each with a different ticket type. Tourists and locals can choose to purchase the VIP tickets which can give you a close up view of your favorite Samba School, or have fun with the majority of the crowd located at the seating areas.

Aside from the extravagant carnival parade, the Rio Carnival is also known for throwing the best parties in town. If you want to rub elbows with the rich and famous or want to spot your favorite celebrity, better head out to the luxurious Magic Ball at the Copacabana Palace Hotel. You also need to know that the tickets to this ball don’t come cheap so if you want to go be prepared to spend money and prepare to dress up in black tie or fancy costume. If you are a bit tight on the budget, but don’t want to miss out on the party fever, you can go to the numerous street parties that are held at almost every corner of Rio. If you think you had your share of crazy parties and loud music, take a guided tour around Rio and check out the beautiful beaches, forests, and other natural locations which are truly a feast for the eyes.

The Recife and Olinda Carnivals

The Parties at Recife and Olinda are very special festivals. The Olinda festivals are specifically made for 5 – 80 year olds who want to sing, dance, and parade in town. In Recife, they celebrate by putting up stages all over town and people get to watch bands and dancers perform live in front of them.

The Bahia Carnival

If ever you happen to be at Salvador, don’t forget to catch the nonstop partying and dancing that happens all throughout the city. The most awaited part of the Salvador Carnival is the parade of over 200 dance troupes and the stages that move around the city, organized by the Blocos with Trio Eletricos.

The Sao Paulo Carnival

The Sao Paulo Carnival is considered as the more affordable option to the Rio Carnival. If you find the Rio Brazil Carnival too expensive or if you ever run out of tickets, Sao Paulo is the best alternative since you will get the same type of energy and excitement when it comes to dancing and samba music.

The Brazil carnival in Sao Paulo happens at their Sambodromo and will be shown on national television in Brazil. Just like the Rio Carnival, the top Samba schools compete against each other and showcase their glamorous costumes and exhilarating dance moves with party goers from all over the country joining in the fun.

The Florianopolis Carnival

If you’re the type who wants to have laid back celebrations by the beach, the Florianopolis Carnival is the best option for you. Far from the hustle and bustle of the crowd in the city, the parties here are more relaxed. So if you want to experience the beach plus the excitement of the Rio celebrations, head over to Florianopolis and celebrate at its beautiful beaches.

Other Brazil Carnivals

When we talk about Brazil Carnivals, the first place that pop into our heads are the Carnivals in Rio. The Brazil Carnivals in Recife-Olinda and Salvador come in next when it comes to the carnivals with the largest attendees. But aside from these three, there are a lot more carnivals in Brazil that are worth visiting especially if you want to get away from the huge crowds. The Fortaleza Carnival is known for promoting art and culture plus an acrobatic show that should not be missed.

The Porto Seguro Carnival is famous for the beauty pageants plus the bands that perform during carnival week. Other carnivals include the Porto de Galinhas which is a party by the beach and the Buzios Carnival which is a gay friendly carnival filled with excitement and entertainment.

The Rio Carnival Fever

The Rio Carnival may be the most sought-after celebration in Brazil. Every tourist and local seems to be infected with the Rio party fever which results to nonstop dancing, singing, and samba music. Although almost every corner of Rio happens to have a party already, there are a few hotspots that should be visited first in order to experience the authentic Rio carioca lifestyle. The grand Rio balls at the Copacabana should not be missed if you want to experience the Rio carnival in style and elegance.

In Centro, Rio Downtown is the place to attend the most crowded street parties and also the the greatest show on earth, the samba school parades at the Sambadrome. Botofogo is known for the Barbas street party wherein party goers are hosed down by a water truck, so you better be ready with an extra shirt. Lapa is the place to enjoy the night life and Bohemia; it’s also filled with alcohol stalls which are great during the carnival season. For those who want to party by the beach, head out to Leblon and sun bathe by the beach or experience the exciting night life in the area.

When is Rio Carnival?

world famous Rio Carnival

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is the biggest carnival (in Portuguese: carnaval) in the world. Millions of people gather on the streets each day during the festival. Samba, the official music and dance of Rio Carnival is at the center of the revelry.

I was lucky for this entire Rio Carnival experience. I arrived in Rio de Janeiro from Peru two weeks before the Carnival to meet up with my friends from Portugal, who both speak the language. It was a big relief with them around as I don’t speak Portuguese and most locals don’t speak and understand English. Because of my friends, we were able to find some of the hidden parties and events in Rio.

It was nice to see how Cariocas (inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro) prepare for the festival weekend. Rio Carnival is the most anticipated event of the year for locals and visitors alike.

The Rio Carnival celebration begins on the Friday before the Ash Wednesday but the Carnival vibe begins as early as December. This year, it will be held on February 9, 2018 (Friday) up to February 14, 2018 (Wednesday).

And for next year, the dates are set on March 1, 2019 (Friday) up to March 6, 2019 (Wednesday).

Watch the Carnival Samba Parades at the Sambadrome

Sambadrome or  “Sambódromo” is a venue purposely built for the Samba Schools parade during the Rio Carnival. It is a parade area of 700 meter stretch of the Marquês de Sapucaí Street with a stadium-style seating capacity of 90,000.

Carnival Samba Parade at the Sambadrome

This magnificent spectacle, with its fiercely contested Samba competitions among the Samba Schools, is the highlight and a must-see during the Rio Carnival.

Carnival Samba Parade Elements

Each Samba School is allotted time to parade along the Sambadrome and prove they are the ultimate champions of Samba. They are being judged from the theme, Samba song, costumes, flag bearer, etc. It’s the collaboration of these different Samba parade elements that make Carnaval a world-famous festival:

The Wings or “Alas”

Wings or “Alas” are the sections of every Samba Schools. Each Samba School is comprised of approximately 30 Wings with each Wing consisting of at least 100 members wearing the same flamboyant costume.

The Flag Bearer or “Porta-Bandeira”

The Flag Bearer and her Escort or “Mestre-sala” are given the privilege of heading the Samba School with the school’s flag in her hand. They dance together to a choreographed routine.

The Floats

Each Samba School is allowed to parade more than 6 floats. These lavishly decorated floats have Samba dancers with their themed and glamorous costumes. Some floats even have moving parts to make it more appealing.

The Samba Dancers or “Passistas”

Passistas are professional Samba dancers who wear the most elaborate bikini costumes. The best of the Passistas from the school is chosen as the queen of the Bateria or “Rainha de Bateria” and will have to dance right in front of the Bateria.

Join the Carnival Street Parties – Blocos

Rio Carnival is not just about watching the grandeur of the Sambadrome parade. It’s also by joining the fun from over 450 street parties or “blocos” or “bandas” throughout Rio de Janeiro before and after the Carnival weekend. These parties are more casual than the Sambadrome parades and you don’t have to buy tickets in order to join.

Bloco's musical band
Afro - Brazilian bloco

People revel around the sound truck that either follows a pre-determined route or remains at a fixed location. Some blocos have various themes like African, Olympics, cross-dressing, etc.

Caipirinha in Lapa
Ipanema Bloco

You can find blocos in just about every neighborhood. But the most popular of these street parties are the neighborhoods of Lapa and Jardim Botanico & Lagoa as well as the beach neighborhoods of Copacabana, Leblon and Ipanema.

Meeting New Friends at the Carnival

Rio Carnival friends

A week prior to the Carnival weekend, my Portuguese friends went back to Portugal and I was on my own again. But only for a while as I met this awesome Swiss guy, Michael. It was a coincidence that Michael booked the same party hostel in Leblon for 5 days like me and booked another 5 days in a hostel in Lapa, the party capital of Rio, during the Carnival weekend just like me again.

It was nice finding someone to party with for 10 days especially during the crazy Carnival weekend. And did I mention that we were both traveling solo for 6.5 months too?

bloco in Lapa

We met new great friends and we reveled together in every blocos that we could find even as early as 6 AM! Blocos are the best! We just needed to take a nap after going to a bloco then look for another famous bloco again. We had so much Caipirinhas and beers that time!

In order to enjoy the parades that usually start at 9:15 PM or 10:00 PM and last up to 3:15 AM or even 4:50 AM, you have to buy the tickets based on your preference and budget. You have to decide on which Parade Group or night to watch, which seat to take and which Sector or area of the parade runway to get.

Choose Your Sambadrome Parade Group or Night

The Access Group

Access Group

The Access Group performs every Carnival Friday and Saturday. Rio’s big Samba Schools compete for each other and the winner and first-runner up make it to the Special Group parade the following year.

Tickets in Access Group are considerably lower than the Special Group as they don’t spend the same budget and also rank below the Special Group. But costumes and floats are still impressive and the performances are still of the highest caliber.

The Special Group

Special Group

The Special Group performs every Carnival Sunday and Monday. It is the premier league of Samba Schools. These are the most famous Samba Schools that have climbed their way to the top of the rankings year after year. They exhibit extravagant performances that are telecasted worldwide.

The Champion’s Parade

The Champion’s Parade, also known as the Winner’s parade, happens the following Saturday after Carnival. After the scores have been tallied and the Top 6 Samba Schools from the Special Group have been announced on Ash Wednesday, they will be asked to come back to parade one last time. Performers are dressed in the same costumes but everyone is in a happy mood this time. They are no longer being judged and it’s just like a celebration of victory.

Ticket prices of the Champion’s Parade are considerably cheaper than the Special Parade’s tickets.

Choose Your Sambadrome Seat

Sambadrome Seating Plan and Sectors (2-7)
Sambadrome Seating Plan and Sectors (8-13)

Open Air Front Boxes or “Frisas” (close to the action)

Open Air Front Boxes or “Frisas” are the seats located at parade runway level. This is the closest you could get to the parade action and take close-up pictures. Each box seats 6 people. You could get individual tickets or you could book the entire box.

Grandstands or “Arquibancadas” (best views)

Grandstands or “Arquibancadas” are located at the top of each sector. These concrete bleachers offer the best panoramic view of the whole runway yet not expensive. But you have to be early to get the best position because there are no numbered seats except for the Tourist Grandstand located in Sector 9.

Allocated Chairs or “Cadeiras” (best value)

Allocated Chairs or “Cadeiras” are numbered plastic seats located at the floor level of Sectors 12 and 13 only. Everybody can have a good look of the parade as the seats are placed in rows divided by steps. These are the second cheapest seats but comfortable.

Luxury Suites or “Camarotes” (VIP experience)

entrance to Lounge Carioca

Luxury Suites or Covered Boxes or “Camarotes” are the most exclusive seats in the Sambadrome. Luxury Suites are the ticket of choice of the rich and famous both in the national and international scene. There’s an enhanced security also for the Luxury Suites even though Sambadrome is considered to be the safest spot in South America during the Carnival.

A Luxury Suite ticket to the Sambadrome grants you access to the specially decorated indoor suite, along with VIP services that include a buffet, an open bar, a waiting service and more.

I was lucky once again this time as I was upgraded from the Open Air Front Boxes seat in Sector 11 to a Luxury Suite seat in Sector 7. I can’t believe that I was upgraded to the most sought-after of all the Rio Carnival tickets! My Luxury Suite, Lounge Carioca, has a maximum capacity of 360 people per day and offers these VIP services:

air-conditioned room with a Premium Buffet
open bar at the Luxury Suites
a Live Brazilian music
luxury suite balcony
Luxury Suite access to parade runway level
a dance floor in the Luxury Suite
Luxury Suite SPA

Choose Your Sambadrome Sector

Sector 1

The tickets for this sector are not for sale. This place is reserved for the members of the Samba Schools’ communities. This sector is usually one of the loudest and liveliest. It is where the schools gather before the parades start.

Sector 2, 3, 4, 5

There are advantages of sitting in sectors toward the beginning of the parade route. Samba Schools are full of excitement and the crowd here goes wild. Not to mention the waiting time is less in between the Samba Schools.

Sector 6, 7

Sambadrome Sector 7

Tickets from Sectors 6 and 7 are the most sought-after because judges are located in front of Sector 7. It has the best location as schools show their best performance in front of them. Tickets in Sector 7 are the most expensive ones among all the sectors.

Sector 9

Known as the tourist sector having a numbered seating and the most expensive grandstand seats. However, not so much Cariocas buy these tickets. If you want to learn Samba from them, this could not be the best place for you.

Sector 8, 9, 10, 11

It is a privileged location close to the percussion gathering area or “Recuo da Bateria” as drummers retreat between Sectors 9 and 11. There’s a good Carnival vibe from these sectors as the band stops at the side and performs as they let the wings go in front.

Sector 12, 13

Tickets from Sectors 12 and 13 are the cheapest. These sectors have bleachers that are set further back because of the Allocated Chairs in front of it.

After the parade, participants usually take off and leave their costumes in the Apotheosis Square, which is nearest to Sectors 12 and 13. It means you can just easily grab those as a souvenir or use as a costume for the blocos.

I had the most incredible time in Rio de Janeiro, which is my favorite city so far. This city amazes me in so many different ways, not to mention the remarkable experience that I had during the Carnival. Going to this world’s largest and most famous Carnival should be on everyone’s travel bucket list!

Sambadrome Parade

The Sambadrome is the official venue of Rio Carnival and will host events of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The Sambadrome is divided into various sectors, or sections, and offers a variety of seating options, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!, ranging from luxury suites to open-air bleachers.

Allocated chairs, Triple Gold Slots Machine cadeiras in Portuguese, are the most affordable of the Sambadrome’s assigned seats.

Rio Carnival is truly a unique event that goes Island Slot the glitz and glam of extravagant parades. Rio Carnival Samba Parades are intense and highly anticipated competitions amongst the Samba Schools located throughout the city of Rio. These Samba Schools are separated hierarchically into groups, the most elite of which compete in Carnival’s official venue: the Sambadrome. The groups that parade through the Sambadrome are called the Access Group and the Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party! Group.

If you are traveling to Carnival on a budget, this event provides a great value for your money, as the tickets are cheaper than those for Special Group Parades, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!, while the processions and performances are extremely high quality.

As sectors and ticket types offer unique experiences, there will inevitably be benefits and drawbacks to each of your alternatives — but remember: there truly isn’t a bad Great Warrior Slots Machine in the house!

These seats are great for getting a feel for what Rio Carnival means to the Cariocas, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!, or locals, who will show you how to party Carnival-style!

The frisas allow you to feel the beat of the samba drums from your own private box, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!, and you will see the vibrant and mesmerizing floats, fast-paced dance moves, and intricately designed costumes as if you are part of the parade, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!. And remember: you don’t need to book the entire box to enjoy the best seats in the house.

The Luxury Suites (Camarotes)

The Luxury Suites (or Camarotes in Portuguese) are elevated, specially decorated indoor boxes that are spread across the parading avenue from Sectors 2 Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party! 11.

Samba School performances begin at the lower-numbered sectors and proceed toward the higher-numbered sectors, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!. There are certain benefits to sitting in a sector located at the beginning of the parade route. These seats offer the unique opportunity to watch the Samba Schools gather, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party! up, and make last minute preparations as they anxiously await their moment in the spotlight.

What’s more, there is a very short New Infographics by 777spinslot.com! time between performances.

Sector 10

After the renovations to the Sambadrome, Sector 4 was renamed Sector 10. Prior to the change, this sector had slightly obstructed views of the runway — but now that is no longer the case. Sector 10 is a great choice for Grandstand seats and is very popular among Cariocas, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!, natives of Rio de Janeiro and Rio Carnival enthusiasts, who sit together in small Vienen En Bonos De Casino.

The drummers’ niche refers to the location where the percussionists Santas Workshop Slots Machine each parading Samba School stop about halfway through their school’s performance Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party! keep drumming. Sector 11 is an exciting place to sit, as you will feel the beat of the drums pulsating throughout your body. This is sure to get you into the Carnival spirit long before everyone else. What’s more, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!, located directly across from Sector 10, Sector 11 offers great views of the parade as the Samba Schools make their climactic march toward the end of Apotheosis Square.

Tickets in Access Group are considerably lower than the Special Group as they don’t spend the same budget and also rank below the Special Group. But costumes and floats are still impressive and the performances are still of the highest caliber.

The Special Group

The Special Group performs every Carnival Sunday and Monday, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!. It is the premier league of Samba Schools. These are the most famous Samba Schools that have climbed their way to the top of the rankings year after year. They exhibit extravagant performances that are telecasted worldwide.

Ticket prices of the Champion’s Parade are considerably cheaper than the Special Parade’s tickets.

Choose Your Sambadrome Seat

Open Air Front Boxes or “Frisas” are the seats located at parade runway level. This is the closest you could get to the parade action and take close-up pictures. Each box seats 6 people. You could get individual tickets or you could book the entire box.

Grandstands or “Arquibancadas” (best views)

Grandstands or “Arquibancadas” are located at the top of each sector. These concrete bleachers offer the best panoramic view of the whole runway yet not expensive. But you have to be early to get the best position because there are no numbered seats except for the Tourist Grandstand located in Sector 9.

Not to mention the waiting time is KingsWin Casino 2000 FS Tournament in between the Samba Schools.

This city amazes me in so many different ways, Samba Carnival Your Ticket to Party!, not to mention the remarkable experience that I had during the Carnival.
